Bustos Votes Against Ryan Budget That Would End Medicare As We Know It

Press Release

Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) released the following statement after voting again against a budget offered by Congressman Paul Ryan that would end Medicare as we know it and raise seniors' health care costs:

"Standing up for Illinois middle class families is my top priority and that is why I voted today against the out-of-touch Ryan Budget that would end Medicare as we know it and devastate priorities that invest in the future of our nation and create opportunity for the least fortunate among us.

"America's success depends on a strong middle class, but the Ryan Budget ends the Medicare guarantee, puts the opportunity for a college education further out of reach and puts national priorities like infrastructure on the backburner. We must protect Medicare and Social Security and continue to make smart investments that preserve our United States' competitive edge.

"Democrats and Republicans need to work together to get our country on a path toward a balanced budget and that is why the first bill I introduced was the Government Waste Reduction Act. My bipartisan, common sense bill would reduce the deficit in a balanced way by cutting down on duplicative services and rooting out waste in government, while preserving crucial services and programs.

"I'll continue to fight for common sense solutions that prioritize the middle class while opposing plans that only look out for special interests."

Earlier this week, Bustos spoke about budgeting priorities that help the middle class on the floor of the House of Representatives.
