Statement from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

Statement

Date: April 11, 2014

"Kathleen Sebelius has been an extraordinary advocate for children and families and a tremendous partner to me as this administration works to ensure that every child gets a high-quality education from cradle to career. No one has worked harder to create opportunities for those who deserve them. Under Kathleen's leadership at Health and Human Services, more than 7 million Americans got health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, lifting a tremendous weight off the shoulders of many students and their families. Our two agencies have worked side by side to invest more federal resources than ever in early childhood education, and Kathleen oversaw a major overhaul of Head Start to support high-quality programs for low-income children. I have learned so much from her courage, vision and sense of moral purpose. I have been fortunate to have been Kathleen's partner these past five years, and I wish her all the best. My team and I look forward to continuing our close partnership with HHS under Sylvia Mathews Burwell's leadership."
