Pitts on Supreme Court Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Case

Statement

Date: March 25, 2014

This morning, Congressman Joe Pitts (PA-16) attended oral arguments in the Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties vs. Sebelius case. The Congressman strongly supports the owners of Conestoga Wood Specialties, the Hahn family, residents of the 16th Congressional District.

"I want to commend the Hahns for their courageous stand for faith and freedom. The road to the Supreme Court was long, but they have persistently fought for the right to practice their values in the marketplace. Their deep faith led them to provide health care long before the federal government forced employers to do so.

"After listening to the questions of all the justices, it seems to me that the Hahns will get the decision they seek. A majority of the court was skeptical of the Obama administration's argument that the government should have the power to overrule the conscientious objections of family businesses. It will be a few months before the ruling is handed down, but I'm optimistic the court will stand in support of religious rights."
