Deutch: McCutcheon Decision Will Further Erode Americans' Faith in Government

Statement

Date: April 2, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee and the author of the Democracy is for People Amendment, issued this statement in response to the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision McCutcheon v. FEC striking down the current $123,200 limit a single person can contribute to federal candidates, parties, and political action committees:

"This terrible decision only compounds the damage of Citizens United and will further erode the American people's faith in the ability of their elected leaders to stand up against billionaires and special interests. It is a dark day for our democracy when the Supreme Court dramatically increases the influence of the super-rich over our elections and government. We are headed down a dangerous path where the voices of average American citizens are effectively drowned out.

"I introduced the Democracy is for People Amendment because the American people have a right to pass laws that protect fairness in our elections, limiting the corrupting influence of private wealth in our elections, and ensure that elected officials are accountable to voters. Free speech is not free if only the wealthy can afford it, and I have never been more committed to advancing a constitutional amendment that overturns these misguided and dangerous decisions."
