Senator Burr Introduces Resolution Honoring Gold Star Wives

Statement

Yesterday, U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) introduced a resolution to designate April 5, 2014 as "Gold Star Wives Day." This day provides an opportunity to honor the members of Gold Star Wives of America, a volunteer organization that has assisted widows and survivors of fallen military members since it was founded in 1945, and thank them for their untiring efforts and support.

"Gold Star Wives are the best of what America has to offer -- out of love and duty to their country, members of Gold Star Wives have taken on responsibilities that consume significant amounts of time and energy," Senator Burr said. "Members of Gold Star Wives are both women and men who have lost someone extremely important to them in service to our country, yet they still have compassion to serve others. Our nation owes these individuals and families a huge debt of gratitude, and by designating April 5 as "Gold Star Wives Day," we can offer a small token of appreciation for their patriotism, service, and sacrifice."

The first meeting of the Gold Star Wives of America occurred on April 5, 1945, with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as founding member. In addition to designating April 5, 2014 as "Gold Star Wives Day," this resolution promotes awareness of the dedication and sacrifice of the families of America's fallen soldiers and veterans.
