Klobuchar: Nearly 13,000 Minnesotans Have Over $9 Million in Unclaimed Tax Refunds Waiting to Be Retrieved

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) today revealed that nearly 13,000 Minnesotans have a total of more than $9 million in unclaimed tax refunds waiting to be retrieved. Klobuchar announced that Minnesotans who didn't file a 2010 tax return have until April 15th to claim any money they may be owed. With the deadline looming, Klobuchar encouraged constituents to see if they are owed money before it's too late. The median potential refund owed to Minnesotans who didn't file 2010 returns is over $500.

"Thousands of Minnesotans are owed millions of dollars in tax refunds that are just waiting to be claimed," Klobuchar said. "With the clock ticking toward the April 15th deadline, I want to encourage Minnesotans who didn't file tax returns in 2010 to see if they are owed money before it's too late."

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently released new data showing that an estimated 918,600 taxpayers nationwide are owed nearly $760 million in unclaimed tax refunds for 2010, with the median refund being worth $571. In some cases, individuals don't file because their income levels are too low to require a tax return, even though taxes have been withheld from their paychecks. Those who didn't file a return have a three-year window to claim their refund, at which point the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.
