Associated Press: US Rep. Welch to Hear of VT Alt. Transportation

Vermont lone U.S. Rep.Peter Welch is going to be hearing Monday from some of the state's transportation leaders at a Burlington meeting called to discuss the state's experience with alternative transportation projects.

The meeting will be attended by Lt. Gov. Phil Scott, the chairs of the Senate and House transportation committees and Transportation Secretary Brian Searles. There will also be leaders from transit, bike, pedestrian, electric vehicle and regional planning organizations.

The officials will be discussing public transit and the state's priorities for alternative transportation. Welch is expected to ask if the officials think the federal Transportation Alternatives program has been successful in Vermont and what federal policies might be changed in order to support alternative transportation methods.

"Funding for public transit, rail, bike, pedestrian and electric vehicles is not only important for Vermont's economy but also contributes to the health of our citizens, communities and environment," Welch said in a statement.

The alternative transportation program helps fund projects that include off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities and recreational trail projects.

"Renewing federal transportation programs is about much more than paving roads and filling potholes," Welch said. "A robust transportation sector is essential to the success of American businesses and to rebuilding the middle class."
