Michaud Helps to Honor Meals on Wheels Program

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Mike Michaud joined with several of his House colleagues to introduce a resolution recognizing the importance of the Meals on Wheels Program. More than 5,000 programs across the country, supported by federal funding made available by the Older Americans Act (AOA), help to provide seniors with nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks every day.

"Senior hunger is a national crisis -- nearly 9 million seniors across the country may not know when they will have their next meal. Meals on Wheels helps to ensure that homebound seniors have access to a wholesome meal and a much-welcomed interaction with a friendly face," said Michaud. "As the annual March for Meals month comes to a close, I'm proud to stand with my colleagues and millions of thankful seniors across the nation in expressing gratitude to those who dedicate their time to this important service."

The Meals on Wheels Association has projected that by 2050, the number of hungry seniors in the United States will be equal to the populations of America's four largest cities combined. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010, Maine had the third-highest percentage of seniors in the nation, at 15.6%.
