Congressman Messer Statement on Religious Freedom Cases before Supreme Court

Press Release

Date: March 25, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the Supreme Court is set to hear opening oral arguments in the cases of Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood Specialties v. Sebelius. Congressman Luke Messer issued the following statement on these cases and the Obama administration's mandate that requires employers to provide contraceptive coverage despite religious objections.

"At the core, these cases before the Supreme Court are about the Obama administration's attempts to stop Americans from freely exercising their religion. Simply put: the federal government should not impose policies that violate fundamental religious liberties.

"The Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood cases will have a huge impact on employers across the nation including a major employer in my district, Grote Industries. I commend Bill Grote and his company for their courage to fight this mandate and protect religious liberty for all employers.

"I look forward to the Supreme Court's deliberations and hope that the Court will strike down this unconstitutional mandate."

Congressman Luke Messer is a co-sponsor of H.R. 940, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act, which would repeal the Health and Human Services mandate requiring employers to provide contraception coverage to their employees.
