Reed Votes to Encourage Small Businesses to Hire More Veterans

Tom Reed voted Tuesday in favor of the Hire More Heroes Act, a bill to encourage small businesses to hire more veterans by excluding employees who already receive health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs or under TRICARE from being counted toward the employer mandate threshold under Obamacare.

"It's common sense that veterans who already receive health care and do not need employer-provided insurance should not be counted toward the employer mandate under Obamacare," Reed said. "A theme we hear regularly talking with veterans and at our veteran's advisory boards is the rising number of unemployed veterans. One way we can care for veterans is by supporting them in their lives after military service by making it easier for employers to hire veterans. The Hire More Heroes Act treats veterans fairly and gives small businesses added incentive and flexibility to make additional hires."

Under current law, the employer mandate impacts businesses that employ more than 50 full-time employees. The Hire More Heroes Act gives employers more incentive and flexibility to hire veterans by excluding them from the calculation used to determine whether an employer is subject to the employer mandate under Obamacare. By protecting veterans from counting toward the mandate threshold, small businesses will have the opportunity to employ more veterans.
