Neugebauer Acts to Preserve Constitutional Checks and Balances

Statement

Congressman Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) released the following statement after voting to rein in an increasingly domineering executive branch.

"Our founders were deliberate in their decisions to divide federal power and put in place a series of checks and balances on each branch of government. They gave Congress the responsibility to make laws, and the President and the executive branch the duty to enforce those laws. But this President has unilaterally decided which laws should be enforced and which will be ignored. This selective approach to enforcement, coupled with his reliance on broad regulations and executive orders to influence policy, is an effort to steamroll our representative system. We won't stand for that.

"I was proud to co-sponsor H.R. 3973, the Faithful Execution of the Law Act. It requires the Attorney General to report to Congress any time a federal official chooses not to enforce all or part of a law. That's important for a few reasons--first, it will force the Administration to be publicly accountable when political decisions influence how our laws are enforced. Second, when it simply isn't possible to implement legislation exactly as it was written, this bill ensures that Congress is informed so that we can address the issue legislatively.

"H.R. 3973, combined with the ENFORCE the Law Act, will improve transparency and keep the government accountable to the American people--just as the founders intended."
