Congressman Young Votes to Protect Seniors and All Americans from Crippling Healthcare Law

Location: Washington, DC

Alaska Congressman Don Young today issued the following statement after the House passage of H.R. 4015, the SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act by a vote of 237--182.

"Today, I voted to protect senior citizens' healthcare access by preventing a crippling 24% cut to their Medicare doctors' rates," said Congressman Don Young. "This much-needed legislation would permanently repeal the flawed Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) Medicare funding formula, a system that currently places added burdens on our nation's medical practitioners and expects them to eat the costs of growing healthcare. The bill would stabilize rates, provide modest increases for the next four years, while two new quality-based payment systems are developed."

"This bill not only provides much needed reforms to Medicare, but also would delay five years of Obamacare penalties enforced upon individuals who choose not to purchase healthcare plans they do not need or cannot afford. I find it extremely hypocritical of the President to delay his healthcare mandate for big business but expect individual Americans to suffer. This is simply another step is finding solutions to the many problems Americans face under the President's healthcare law. While full repeal and reform is still a primary focus of mine, the only way of finding immediate relief is through small steps that will help reduce the pain and suffering of this law."
