Menendez Statement on Chertoff NOMINATION to Head DHS
January 11, 2005

JERSEY CITY, NJ-House Democratic Caucus Chairman Bob Menendez (D-NJ-13) today made the following statement regarding President Bush's nomination of Federal Appeals Court Judge Michael Chertoff as the new Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security:

"I applaud President Bush for his choice of Judge Michael Chertoff to lead the Department of Homeland Security-a department so critical in securing America.

"Mr. Chertoff has a diverse record of public service-from his time as the US Attorney for New Jersey and Assistant U.S. Attorney General to his service as an Appellate Court Judge-which will serve him well in this new position, as he understands the nature of the challenges faced by law enforcement officials and first responders in the post-September 11th era.

"Additionally, Mr. Chertoff's familiarity with New Jersey and the metropolitan area provides him with the insight necessary to understand the complexities of funding needs in this densely populated region, which has a history of terrorist activity and terrorist acts.

"I urge my colleagues in the Senate to provide a prompt and favorable confirmation of this highly qualified candidate."
