Frelinghuysen Statement on Chertoff Nomination as Secretary of U.S. Homeland Security Department
January 11, 2005

Washington, DC - Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (NJ-11) today issued the following statement on the nomination of Judge Michael Chertoff, a New Jersey native, to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"Judge Chertoff is a well respected law enforcement and judicial official in New Jersey and throughout the nation. I m pleased that President Bush has nominated him to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"As Assistant U.S. Attorney General, Chertoff was a leader in addressing many of our nation s critical homeland security concerns after the tragedy of September 11, 2001. And as a resident and former U.S. Attorney in New Jersey, I m confident Judge Chertoff, as the next Secretary of the Homeland Security Department, will be mindful of our state s vulnerabilities to terrorism and unique security needs.

"Once confirmed by the U.S. Senate, I will request a meeting with the Judge to discuss allocating homeland security funds based upon the risk New Jersey and other high-threat areas face. I look forward to working with Judge Chertoff on this and other critical homeland security issues facing New Jersey and our entire nation."
