U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01), a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, released the following statement after a new National Park Service (NPS) report showed that national parks in Hawaii attracted 5.1 million visitors in 2012, generating $314 million in spending and supporting 3,723 jobs in the state:

"Hawaii's national parks, such as Haleakala and Hawaii Volcanoes, attract visitors from all over the world to our islands. This new report reaffirms the important role these special sites play in supporting our local economy and creating jobs for our residents. The World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, which includes the USS Arizona Memorial, is one of Hawaii's most popular attractions, bringing an average of 1.5 million visitors annually. Our national parks help us share Hawaii's history, culture, and natural beauty, and I will continue to support NPS to ensure these national treasures are protected."

A second report released today also estimated how the October 2013 government shutdown impacted our national parks around the country. The 16-day shutdown resulted in 7.88 million fewer park visitors and an estimated loss of $414 million in visitor spending.
