Rooney: Obama Proposal A Campaign Manifesto, Not a Serious Budget

Statement

U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney (FL-17), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement on the budget request for FY 2015 submitted by President Obama today -- one month past the statutory deadline:

"The President's proposal is far more of a campaign manifesto than it is a serious budget, and I'm sure it will be treated as such in Congress and on the Appropriations Committee. Our country is facing a stagnant economy, persistently high unemployment, a mountain of debt, and threats from around the world. We need real leadership from the White House, but this budget casts the President more as Campaigner in Chief than Commander in Chief.

"We're coming off three major bipartisan achievements in Congress -- the Ryan-Murray budget, the omnibus appropriations bill, and the farm bill. I'd like to build on those accomplishments by working with the President and any Democrat in Congress on a big deal that saves Social Security and Medicare in exchange for fixing the tax code and closing loopholes. Unfortunately, the President's budget signals that he has no desire to work with Congress and little interest in governing or compromise.

"The President's budget busts the spending caps in the Ryan-Murray agreement that he signed just a few months ago, excludes the very modest reform to extend the life of Social Security from his last budget, and guts our national defense. It includes every tax hike the White House could dream of, but still adds $8.3 trillion to the national debt and never, ever, balances."
