Representative Jared Polis (CO-02) today made the following statement on the tax reform plan released by Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (MI-4):

"Releasing a plan for such a drastic overhaul in an election year was a bold step by Chairman Camp, and I commend him for that. While his plan isn't perfect, it does offer a starting place for Democrats and Republicans to come together and rewrite the tax code so it is fairer, simpler, and more equitable for both individuals and businesses. With an antiquated tax code that is more than 4000 pages long, it is beyond time for comprehensive tax reform.

"Our economy does best when individuals and businesses make decisions based on their own needs, and not on arcane tax provisions. Chairman Camp's proposal is a step in that direction.

"As an entrepreneur, I know all too well the difficulties of navigating our complex tax code, while just trying to get a business off the ground. When I started Proflowers.com, we had three employees and I helped load the flowers in the back of the truck as it was pulling away on our first Valentine's Day. We didn't have an army of lawyers and accountants to navigate the tax code. When we were finally profitable, like nearly all other small companies, we paid close to the full 35% tax rate.

"I look forward to working in a bipartisan manner to bring our tax code into the 21st century with a simpler, flatter, lower tax rate to grow our economy and promote innovation and opportunity for all."
