Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today voted to provide $1 billion in loan guarantees to Ukraine aimed at helping insulate vulnerable Ukrainians from the effects of reduced energy subsidies and begin providing economic stability to the country.

"I am so very proud to say to our friends in Kiev and on the Crimean peninsula, that America stands with you -- America stands with the people of the Ukraine," said Maloney. "Wherever equality is the goal, peaceful change is the method and greater justice is the aim -- America stands with you. President Obama stands with you, and we in Congress stand with you."

Maloney, who last week called for immediate assistance from the International Monetary Fund, stressed that the United States can and should use additional tools to support representative democracy in Ukraine:

"There is much more that we can do to stand with Ukraine in the days and weeks to come. We can work with the international community to encourage unity. The U.S. has initiated visa bans, but we can also freeze assets, and set limitations on Russian trade and investment. And there are a number of things we can do to help to provide the people of the Ukraine with macroeconomic stability so they can meet their debt obligations."

Last week Maloney joined many of her Ukrainian constituents to memorialize the protestors who lost their lives and discuss what can be done to support New Yorkers with family members in Ukraine. Americans who want to inquire about a U.S. citizen traveling in Ukraine should call 888-407-4747.
