Issue Position: The Affordable Care Act

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

Dear Rhode Islander,

While there has been a lot of attention around the rollout of the federal health care website, I'm glad to say that Rhode Island took the time to create its own health care marketplace and website, HealthSourceRI.com -- and that has made all the difference.

In its first three months, over 600 RI small businesses successfully began their application process and nearly 10,000 individuals successfully applied for health insurance through the Rhode Island marketplace.

Please visit HealthSourceRI.com to register your family.

You can also call 1-855-840-HSRI (4774) to receive guidance in English, Español, or Portuguese. This hotline is open Monday-Saturday 8am-9pm and Sundays 12pm-6pm.

Please note, if you weren't able to sign up for individual insurance by December 31, you can still enroll - but the absolute final day to enroll without penalty is March 31. And despite delays for states using the federal small business website, RI's small business marketplace is up and running.

I want to make sure that you, your family, and your business are aware of some key resources.

As always, my office is available to help you with questions you, your family, or your business may have about the Affordable Care Act. In addition to the HealthSource RI hotline, please feel free to call my office at 401-453-5294 with any questions or concerns.

I also hope you'll take a moment to share your personal stories below. I've heard from some Rhode Islanders who are going to be able to afford health insurance for the first time in years, even decades, because of the Affordable Care Act.

Best regards,

U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse
