We Support the Troops

Press Release

Date: Feb. 27, 2014

Senate Republicans on Thursday maneuvered to derail legislation improving health care, education and job-training benefits for veterans. Unable to inject a controversial and unrelated Iran sanctions provision in the veterans bill, Republicans prepared a procedural move to sidetrack the entire bill. "Folks give a lot of good speeches about supporting the troops. We will see how many are prepared now to come forward and pass a very significant piece of legislation," Sen. Bernie Sanders told Ed Schultz on Thursday before the vote. "Republicans apparently believe that it is okay to give huge tax breaks to large corporations, to give huge tax breaks to the wealthiest families in this country, to spend trillions of dollars on wars without worrying how to pay for it, but when it comes to $21 billion for veterans over a 10-year period to take care of veterans and their families apparently they have difficulty with that." Sanders is chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
