Smith Votes Against Raising the Debt Ceiling

Statement

Date: Feb. 11, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today made the following statement after voting against legislation to increase the federal debt ceiling:

"The debt ceiling is a reminder we are spending too much money we do not have. The requirement to address this issue is our best opportunity for reform. It defeats the purpose of a debt limit to simply raise the borrowing authority without doing anything to address the drivers of our long-term deficit.

"Any increase in the debt ceiling should be paired with significant budget reforms or other solutions to put our country on a better, more sustainable path."
