Issues: Elections

U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today released the following statement applauding U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) for reintroducing his bill, the Fair Elections Now Act, to broaden participation among ordinary Americans in Senate elections:

"Senator Durbin has been a strong leader in efforts to reform our political system and fight back against big money politics and I thank him for reintroducing the Fair Elections Now Act. Whether it's jobs, education, health care or the environment, the unlimited spending of special interests and dark money groups erodes the public's trust in government. Now more than ever, we must empower ordinary Americans to have the loudest voices in Washington."

Last week, Congressman Sarbanes was joined by more than one hundred Members of Congress to introduce the Government By the People Act (H.R. 20) -- a bipartisan bill that would empower millions of everyday Americans to take back their government from big money special interests.
