Issues: Women Abortion

Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-6) today voted for pro-life legislation designed to prevent taxpayer funding of abortions.

The House Judiciary Committee, where Bachus serves as a subcommittee chairman, approved the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. The bill would establish a permanent government-wide ban on the use of federal funds to pay for abortions and close potential loopholes to the long-standing Hyde Amendment.

Congressman Bachus, who is an original cosponsor of the legislation, said, "The Hyde Amendment set an important precedent when it established restrictions on the spending of taxpayer money for abortions. It and similar protections for unborn children should not be threatened by the uncertainty created by Obamacare mandates and the need for yearly reauthorizations. We need a law clearly stating that it is not the policy of the federal government to use taxpayer money to fund abortions."

The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act was introduced by Congressman Christopher Smith (NJ-4) and referred to the Judiciary Committee for legislative consideration. During a committee markup session today, Bachus voted against several proposed amendments to weaken the bill.
