Byrne Announces First Legislative Act as Congressman: Repeal and Replace ObamaCare

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Following his swearing-in to the United States House of Representatives, Congressman Bradley Byrne (AL-1) immediately announced that he would cosponsor H.R. 3121, the American Health Care Reform Act. This bill, championed by Republican Study Committee Chairman Steve Scalise (LA-1) and cosponsored by 118 House conservatives, repeals and replaces the ObamaCare law with common-sense, market-based solutions.

Byrne said: "Over the past six months, I promised my constituents that if elected, I would fight to repeal the destructive ObamaCare law and replace it with common-sense, conservative reforms. As my first legislative act as Congressman, I am making good on that pledge.

"This measure eliminates billions in taxes and thousands of pages of burdensome regulations by repealing ObamaCare, which is weighing down our economy and hurting families across South Alabama. However, it's not enough to just be against something -- to govern, we have to provide conservative alternatives and do what is right for the American people.

"This bill spurs competition by working through the market, instead of government mandates, allowing Americans to buy insurance across state lines, reforming medical malpractice laws, providing tax relief for families, and safeguarding individuals with pre-existing conditions from being discriminated against while barring all federal funding for abortion. I look forward to working with Congressman Scalise and my conservative colleagues to promote this common-sense, conservative legislation."

Republican Study Committee Chairman Steve Scalise (LA-1) responded: "It is significant that on Bradley Byrne's first day as a Member of Congress, he has already shown determination to solve problems facing hard-working families in Alabama by co-sponsoring our bill to lower health costs and put patients back in charge of their health care decisions.

"By supporting the American Health Care Reform Act, Bradley is taking immediate action to roll up his sleeves and get to work helping Alabama families who have lost good coverage they had and liked because of President Obama's health care law. I look forward to working with him to replace President Obama's failed health care law with real reforms that solve the problems in American health care without all of the unworkable taxes and mandates in Obamacare."
