Roskam Statement on December Jobs Report

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement on the December 2013 jobs report, that showed while the unemployment rate dropped to 6.7%, only 74,000 jobs were created last month and the labor participation rate dropped to a record 62.8%:

"This morning's crushing jobs report is a reminder that recent low unemployment numbers is largely due to people leaving the labor force all together. The labor participation rate is the lowest it's been since 1978--a disturbing statistic. And for those Americans who did find work in 2013, studies show a significant percentage were part-time or low-wage work, not the quality jobs that provide stability for American families or signal the long-term growth our economy needs.

"For years the president has been touting the federal government as a panacea--it could create jobs, it could insert itself into one-sixth of our economy with a massive healthcare law, and everyone's lives would be better. But after the stumbling healthcare rollout, President Obama recently lamented that federal agencies are big, outdated and inefficient, thus limiting what government can accomplish. What was seemingly a revelation to the president is something a vast majority of Americans have always known: a bigger, more intrusive federal government isn't the answer.

"In the new year, the House of Representatives will pursue policies that build a 21st Century economy for all Americans. We will forward jobs training programs to aid individuals who want to reenter the workforce with new skills. We will continue work on tax reform to make the United States more competitive around the world. From bills on energy and education, to reducing red tape and easing the way for innovation, the House is committed to the long-term growth of our economy and our workforce."
