Helping Children, Ros-Lehtinen Votes to Expand Research for Pediatric Care

Press Release

Location: Miami, FL

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen voted to divert federal money used for political party conventions to instead increase pediatric medical research. Ros-Lehtinen's vote for the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act ensures that the National Institute of Health (NIH) will receive $126 million for research benefitting children with a variety of diseases and will establish a Pediatric Research Initiative Fund. The study of any pediatric disease is eligible for funding after clearance by an appropriate NIH panel. Organizations such as the March of Dimes, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation, Autism Speaks, the Coalition for Pediatric Medical Research, and other organizations focused on pediatric care have endorsed this bill.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"Providing additional funds to medical researchers will help get children affected with diseases on the fast track to more efficient treatment or, hopefully, an eventual cure. We must continue to work so our children can look forward to a future full of promise. Our kids should have access to cutting-edge medical research. I am hopeful that this bill will help us take steps toward completing important medical research and getting effective treatments in the hands of patients."
