Rep. Roybal-Allard Brings Congresswomen & Immigration Advocates Together for Women's Immigration Working Group

Press Release

Date: Jan. 15, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women Immigration

Today, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard hosted a meeting in her office to bring together women members of Congress and women's immigration groups to kick off the push for immigration reform in 2014. This coalition, known together as the Immigration Women's Working Group, was formed last year to ensure that women's voices are heard in this critical debate and that women's interests are served by our nation's immigration policies.

"There is a tendency in the immigration debate to focus on men and their work, but the majority of immigrants to our country are women and children," said Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard. "We cannot allow their specific needs and experiences to be left out of the discussion as we move forward toward comprehensive immigration reform," Congresswoman Roybal-Allard added.

In addition to the 18 Members of Congress and the coalition of women's immigration groups in attendance, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi stopped by to show her support. The Leader promised that she will continue to work with Congresswoman Roybal-Allard and the Immigration Women's Working Group to ensure women's voices are represented in immigration reform.
