Chair McMorris Rodgers Statement on Passing of Ariel Sharon

Statement

Date: Jan. 11, 2014
Issues: Foreign Affairs

House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement today about the passing of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon:

"Ariel Sharon was a great statesman who finally found rest today after a long, tumultuous life defending his homeland of Israel. First as a general, then cabinet minister and prime minister, Sharon always worked to protect Israel from her enemies and render military aggression against Israel futile. From this position of strength, he was able to move toward peace with the Palestinians and led the unilateral Israeli withdrawal of settlements and troops from the Gaza Strip."

"We remember him as a great friend of the United States who was committed to stopping the spread of terrorism in the Middle East. Now, after eight years in a coma, his life has come to an end. May his example inspire us, and leaders around the world, to pursue peace with strength and security."
