To "provide for the common defense" that protects the American people and advances the interests of the United States is the primary function of our federal government. There are those who would do America harm, and the need to protect our nation against these threats is as pressing as ever. Senator Cornyn is committed to ensuring a strong military that has the resources necessary to meet the challenges our nation faces and preserve our way of life for the next generation of Texans.

One in every ten service members call Texas home, and there is no stronger advocate in Washington for Texas military personnel, both active duty and veterans, than Senator Cornyn. The son of a World War II bomber pilot and 31-year Air Force veteran, Senator Cornyn knows firsthand the sacrifices made by the Texans who place themselves in harm's way. The belief that our nation owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to these heroes and their families guides Senator Cornyn every day in the Senate.

That's why Senator Cornyn has fought tirelessly to reduce the backlog of claims at the Department of Veterans' Affairs, passing legislation to apply the successful Texas public-private partnership model on a nationwide scale. Senator Cornyn's bill will help ensure the federal government keeps its promises to our wounded warriors, who deserve care second to none.

Senator Cornyn is also a leading proponent of protecting the right to vote for men and women in the military. He successfully passed the bipartisan Military and Overseas Voters' Relief Act, legislation that cut bureaucratic red tape for service members voting overseas. A belief in government by the people, for the people is the foundation of our great nation. Senator Cornyn's legislation safeguards voting rights for members of our military so that they can be sure their votes are counted.
