Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement honoring the life of Nelson Mandela.

"As we mourn the death of Nelson Mandela, we also celebrate a life of remarkable courage, compassion and grace. Nelson Mandela inspired the entire world through his tireless efforts for equality, denouncing injustice in all corners and heralding peace and reconciliation in the face of violence and hatred. In enduring the shackles of prison for nearly three decades, he freed the world from the scourge of apartheid for all time. It did seem impossible, until Nelson Mandela got it done. Nelson Mandela is a hero for the ages and his indomitable spirit will live on forever, inspiring future generations to the cause of freedom and human dignity."
