Statement on the Signing of Hawaii's Marriage Equality Law

Statement

Date: Nov. 13, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) released the following statement today, after Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie signed a law legalizing marriages between same-sex partners:

"For supporters of marriage equality, this day has been a long time coming. In that time, our community and many individuals within it have challenged personal beliefs and learned important lessons. Today, Hawaii proudly joins the growing group of states that show their respect for our LGBT brothers and sisters through legislation.

"In telling these committed, loving couples that they deserve the right to celebrate their unions, we express the Aloha and acceptance that have made Hawaii the place that we love. Marriage equality is about more than rights. It is about respect and equality for all."
