Issue Position: Spending Cuts and Debt

Issue Position

For the first time in our nation's history, the United States has recently run multiple trillion dollar deficits. Our debt is $16 trillion and climbing each day. If our debt were divided up, each person in America would owe more than $50,000--that's more than the median household income for the state of Indiana. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has predicted that the situation could get even worse, and our debt could be as high as 87% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2023.

Congress must take immediate action to reduce spending and balance our budget. The math is simple: we cannot continue to spend money we simply do not have and saddle future generations with unsustainable levels of debt. Hoosiers work hard to live within their means and so should Congress.

Getting our fiscal house in order will not be easy. Tough choices will must be made. But Indiana was able to do it, and so can our federal government. I am proud to have participated in Indiana's financial turnaround during my time in the state legislature, and while on the House Budget Committee I am committed to bringing Hoosier common sense to our nation's budget discussions. America needs pro-growth policies that will offer economic opportunity, and eliminate the regulatory and tax burdens that restrict job growth.
