Press Release

Date: Nov. 14, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Stockton) released a letter sent to the Farm Bill Conference Committee Leaders requesting that language be included in the final version of this year's farm bill that would help farmers protect themselves from financial losses due to federal quarantines. The letter was signed by more than 20 agricultural organizations nationwide, including the California Farm Bureau Federation, California Citrus Mutual, and the Western Growers Association.

"I have heard from local farmers in the Central Valley how devastating losses due to federal quarantines can be. Just two years ago, we had an invasive pest cause one of these quarantines, costing farmers and growers nearly an entire season's revenue. I am glad to have the farming community behind me and the idea that insurance should be available against such devastating losses," said Congressman McNerney.

The House and Senate have appointed conferees, meaning that a group of Members of Congress from both the House and Senate will work toward finalizing a version of the farm bill. It will then be voted on in both chambers.

"It is imperative that we help local farmers and growers access the resources they need to continue to thrive. They are a vital component of our local economy, not only providing products locally, but creating economic growth and stability. They should not have to worry about losing an entire season's harvest due to a federally mandated quarantine," said McNerney.
