Issue Position: Agriculture/Farm Bill

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2013

On June 20, I joined 170 of my Republican colleagues in voting on one of the most important pieces of agriculture policy in decades - the Farm Bill. I supported the legislation because Americans deserved common-sense reform -- plain and simple.

Provisions to save taxpayers $40 billion dollars, impose accountability, reduce the size and cost of government, apply market-oriented approaches, and further research toward a safe, affordable, and reliable food supply would have gone a long way toward strengthening this entire sector for generations to come.

But, none of these conservative-minded, market-based improvements are in place because some of my colleagues chose to defeat one of the most reform-minded pieces of legislation in decades.

Now, status quo leaves our nation on the hook for $973 billion dollars until Congress acts. When it does, I will stand once again and strongly on the side of lower spending, less government, and accountability - tried and true conservative principles yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
