Congressman Reed at Lufkin to Talk Manufacturing Caucus, Rami, and making Manufacturing Successful in New York

Congressman Tom Reed visited local manufacturer Lufkin-RMT Wednesday, at the manufacturer's newly expanded location in Wellsville. The facility tour and visit with employees was an opportunity for Lufkin to share with Reed what Washington can do to lower the cost of doing business in New York and encourage manufacturers to do what Reed calls the "make it here, sell it there" approach to American manufacturing.

"Manufacturers like Lufkin are our nation's job creators and are central to the American manufacturing renaissance," Reed said. "Knocking down barriers to growth, cutting that red tape and letting these businesses do their jobs is the best way to support a sector that employs more than 11 million Americans. One way we can spur that growth is through public-private partnerships outlined in the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act I introduced in the House."

Congressman Reed introduced his bipartisan Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act of 2013 (RAMI) to help promote the "make it here, sell it there" approach for local manufacturers like Lufkin. The bill brings together manufacturers, research universities and community colleges and the private sector to create a network of regional institutes across the country. Reed says the public-private partnerships will increase domestic production while arming the next generation with high-tech skills to fill in-demand jobs, addressing our country's skills gap.

Congressman Reed, co-chair of the House Manufacturing Caucus, welcomes Southern Tier and Finger Lakes manufacturers of all sizes to Washington to participate in caucus events. Cummins, Dresser Rand, and Finger Lakes Community College/GW Lisk have all brought their stories to Washington. "We want to add to that list of New York experts in manufacturing sharing their success stories with the caucus," Reed continued. "We need that kind of conversation and collaboration on what is working and what isn't and Lufkin certainly has some "best practices' to share with other manufacturers."

Earlier this summer Lufkin underwent a major expansion into its state-of-the-art, 55,000-square-foot facility, a move Congressman Reed says is good news for adding jobs for skilled workers and a multi-million dollar investment in the local economy. Reed's Lufkin visit comes on the heels of Reed's recent visit to another manufacturer, Nucor Vulcraft in Chemung.
