Maloney Statement on September Jobs Report

Floor Speech

Date: Oct. 23, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Ranking House Member of the Joint Economic Committee and former chair, today issued the following statement after the belated announcement of September job numbers.

"Today's delayed report showed that despite all the headwinds heading into the government shutdown, job growth continued at roughly the same rate as previous months. There has been steady progress, but much more needs to be done.

"There are serious drags on job growth that Congress can and should fix immediately to help our economy: the uncertainty around the federal budget, the series of self inflicted wounds around the debt ceiling, the job killing sequester cuts, and the lack of any meaningful pro-jobs agenda.

"There are actions we can take and problems we can fix. For instance, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has projected that if Congress simply restored the sequester budget cuts, the economy would add nearly a million additional jobs next year alone.

"And just as millions of American's have access for the first time to affordable health care insurance, it's tragic that the House majority continues to focus all its energy on snatching that away from them while doing nothing to encourage real job growth"
