Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), senior House member of the Joint Economic Committee, offered the following statement on the federal government shutdown that took effect today:
"This is yet another manufactured crisis put in place by the Republican House Majority.
"If the Speaker allowed an up or down vote on the budget resolution that has been passed by the Senate, we wouldn't be in this position. The economic impact of this shutdown could snowball. Economist Mark Zandi, in his testimony before the Joint Economic Committee two weeks ago, said "Political brinkmanship creates significant uncertainty and anxiety among consumers, businesses and investors, weighing on their willingness to spend, hire and invest.'
"With the Treasury Department's estimate that the limit on federal borrowing will be reached on October 17, this budget crisis could combine with the debt ceiling debate and call into question the full faith and credit of the United States. That must not be allowed to happen."
