Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (R-IN) applauded passage of House Resolution 3273 -- the Deficit Reduction and Economic Growth Working Group Act of 2013 -- in the U.S. House of Representatives today:
"I hear from constituents daily who want the nation's leaders from both parties to come together to solve the pressing issues we face. A bicameral and bipartisan working group aiming to break the current stalemate is a step in the right direction. It's time for Republicans and Democrats to get in a room together to find solutions.
The importance of these discussions is monumental. Our debt increases by $2 million every minute and we all own a piece of it. If we don't act now, our children and grandchildren will be saddled with an unfair burden they don't deserve. I urge President Obama to supply the leadership our nation needs right now by calling Senate Democrats to the negotiating table."
H.R. 3273 establishes a "Bicameral Working Group on Deficit Reduction and Economic Growth" to make recommendations to the House and Senate on discretionary spending levels, a change in the debt limit and reforms to direct spending programs.
The working group would be comprised of 20 members-- ten appointed by the Speaker of the House and ten appointed by the Majority Leader of the Senate. The House Minority Leader would be able to recommend four members to the Speaker and the Senate Minority Leader would be able to recommend four members to the Senate Majority Leader. Members of the working group would be required to begin meeting within one calendar day of their appointment and to meet each calendar day thereafter.
