Tierney Statement on Tea Party Shutdown of the Federal Government

Statement

Date: Oct. 1, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Tierney issued the following statement after House Republicans passed yet another Tea Party-driven spending resolution to undermine the Affordable Care Act and shut down the government. This resulted in the first federal government shutdown in 17 years.

"Late last night, the Tea Party-wing of the House Republican Caucus shut down the federal government. By doing so, they failed to fulfill our country's obligations to our seniors, veterans, military families, and millions of other Americans and demonstrated they are not interested in responsibly governing. Speaker Boehner and House Republicans used the shutdown of the federal government as leverage in their misguided pursuit of undermining the Affordable Care Act, which has been settled law for years, determined to be constitutional by the Supreme Court, validated by the last presidential election, and withstood more than 41 prior House Republican attempts to repeal or dismantle it. The American people -- particularly the hundreds of thousands of workers who are now on furlough -- deserve far better than the House Republicans' reckless and divisive politics. I will keep pressing for a responsible solution to quickly end the federal government shutdown so Congress can renew its focus on creating jobs and continuing our economic recovery," Congressman Tierney said.
