Boustany Calls Attention to Protecting Right to Life to House Speaker

Statement

Date: Oct. 1, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-South Louisiana) issued the following statement after signing a letter addressed to House Speaker John Boehner seeking to incorporate H.R. 940, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act, along with a cessation of federal dollars for abortions into the continuing resolution or on legislation addressing the debt ceiling:

"I've long been committed to protecting the right to life, religious freedom, and the rights of conscience. H.R. 940's provisions would amend Obamacare to ensure the federal government cannot force individuals to buy insurance coverage that includes items or services against which they have deeply held moral or religious objections. It would also ensure a private right of action for victims facing discriminatory practices on this matter.

"As a physician, I'm proud to support conscience protections for pro-life Americans. Washington should not fine them for their beliefs.Congress must continue to speak up for the unborn while protecting the religious freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution."
