Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI12) released the statement below on House Republicans' efforts to pass piecemeal funding bills instead of a comprehensive government funding measure.
"Today, House Republicans put partisan foolery ahead of the American people, shutting down our government for the first time in 17 years. After targeting the Affordable Care Act with unrealistic demands, House Republicans are now attempting to force Congress to prioritize aspects of essential government service that all Americans rely on. This half-cooked public relations move will not work, and the American people will not stand for more games.
"As a World War II veteran, I know full well the value of the memorial that honors my own brothers-in-arms who fell in the line of duty. I know the importance of funding Veterans Affairs efforts to help those who sacrificed so much. I've fought to protect and expand our national parks more than any other person in this entire body. But I also know about the importance of life-saving medical research at the National Institutes of Health and getting funding for FDA inspectors to keep our food safe, and neither of those gets any funding in the cut-and-bite Republican bills. I absolutely refuse to pick and choose among government programs. The time for games is over, and House Republicans must work with Democrats in the House and Senate to ensure continued funding for the federal government. For Speaker Boehner and House Republicans, the time to do the job the American people overwhelmingly demand of their elected officials is unequivocally now.
"Enough harm has been done already. Every minute our government remains tied up in this nonsense costs us dearly. We've had enough manufactured crises. House Republicans have made a mockery of this body and this nation, and the American people deserve an end to this embarrassment."
