Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) issued the following statement after the latest spending bill passed by the House of Representatives included an amendment that would give the power to employers and insurers to refuse coverage of important health care services for women to which they have moral objections, such as contraception.
"I believe that every woman in this country should have the right to make decisions about her own health care," said Sen. Franken. "And the legislation passed by the House of Representatives is an affront to that right. It allows politics to get between women and their doctors and it allows the beliefs of some to infringe on the rights of others. Congress should be focused on finding a bipartisan compromise to prevent the shutdown of the federal government, not rehashing old political fights."
