Tierney Opposes GOP Spending Bill Defunding Affordable Care Act

Statement

Date: Sept. 20, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Tierney issued the following statement after the House approved a resolution that keeps the federal government open until December 15, 2013, while defunding the Affordable Care Act and locking in deep sequester cuts that are hurting middle-class families and our local communities. The resolution was approved by a nearly-party line vote of 230 to 189.

"Rather than exhibiting real leadership and putting forward a responsible solution that had a chance of becoming law, Speaker Boehner increased the risk of a government shutdown by caving in to the Tea Party-led element of his Republican Caucus and advancing this resolution defunding the Affordable Care Act. The American people are tired of these kind of divisive and destructive tactics. They deserve a balanced spending resolution, one that replaces the devastating sequester cuts and makes the right investments that create jobs, continue our economic recovery, and move our country forward," Congressman John Tierney said.
