Tierney Opposes House GOP Bill Cutting Food Aid to Millions of Americans

Statement

Congressman John Tierney issued the following statement after House Republicans passed legislation (H.R. 3102) that would drastically cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and result in nearly four million Americans losing food assistance.

"50 million Americans -- nearly 25,000 in my district -- struggle to feed themselves and their families. Yet, House Republicans passed a bill today that cuts $40 billion over 10 years from basic food assistance. With so many struggling to find work and make ends meet, we should be focused on strengthening anti-poverty and anti-hunger programs not dismantling them as House Republicans wish to do,' said Congressman John F. Tierney.

H.R. 3102 is opposed by a wide range of organizations such as the AARP, the AFL-CIO, the NEA, AFSCME, AFT, UAW, the National Skills Coalition and the National Council on Aging.
