Bill Johnson Will Not Accept Pay in Event of Government Shutdown

Congressman Bill Johnson (OH-6) announced today that he is helping lead the effort to pass the Government Shutdown Fairness Act -- H.R. 3160, which would prohibit Members of Congress from receiving a salary in the event of a government shutdown. Rep. Johnson stated:

"A government shutdown is not in the best interest of our nation, and would represent a failure of both political parties, and this President, to work together to find common ground. I served in the Air Force for 26 years, and I started small businesses after my military service, so I come from a results-oriented culture. I'm frustrated with the dig-in-your-heels-at-any-cost-to-America crowd in Washington, and so are the people I represent. No member of Congress should be paid in a government shutdown, and neither should President Obama or his cabinet.

I'll continue to work throughout the weekend and into next week, to help avert a government stoppage -- a shutdown that could disproportionately impact seniors and our troops. I remain committed to defunding and repealing Obamacare, and I'm hopeful that the Senate will, at the very least, agree to delay the implementation of this government takeover of our health care system that so many Americans rightly oppose."

The Government Shutdown Fairness Act is consistent with the 27th Amendment in holding salaries in escrow until the end of this Congress. For this reason, Rep. Johnson asserted:

"If my pay should be directed to an escrow account, to be funded to me at the end of the year, I will donate that amount to charity. I refuse to profit from the stupidity and mule-headed culture of modern-day Washington, D.C."
