Grayson: Food Assistance Cuts Hurt Central Florida's Most Vulnerable Citizens

Press Release

Today, Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) voted against H.R. 3102, which will cut food assistance to children and families by nearly $40 billion. Unfortunately, the legislation passed on a 217-210 vote.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, H.R. 3102 would deny Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to approximately 3.8 million low-income individuals in 2014, and to nearly 3 million Americans annually over the coming decade. The Republican-sponsored bill will take the food out the mouths of our nation's most hungry, including children, seniors, veterans, the unemployed, and the working poor.

"SNAP is a necessary source of good for hardworking Americans who are struggling to feed their families, and get back on their feet," Grayson said. "More than 3.5 million Floridians received SNAP assistance in June -- why are we even considering taking food out of the mouths of the hungry? No child should go to bed with an aching stomach. No family should have no food on the table. The draconian cuts contained in this bill are sadistic, unfair, and downright disgraceful."

Until these cuts take hold, more than 36,000 households receive SNAP assistance in Florida's 9th Congressional District.Today, Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) voted against H.R. 3102, which will cut food assistance to children and families by nearly $40 billion.
