Luján Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico's Third District released the following statement today in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began on September 15.

"As we embark upon the 25th anniversary of Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the unique and enduring contributions Hispanics have made and continue to make to this great nation. Beginning as a week-long recognition under President Johnson, and expanding in 1988 to the month-long celebration we know today, Hispanic Heritage Month has been an opportunity to reflect not only on the progress the community has made, but to remember the challenges we still must address.

"On the 25th anniversary we can celebrate that in a few short months, millions more Hispanics will have access to health care as a result of the Affordable Care Act. But we must continue with a determined spirit to enact comprehensive immigration reform that is good for our families, good for economy, and good for the future of our country.

"This year's theme, "Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor,' emphasizes the abundant talent and significant contributions Hispanics have made in all sectors of American society. Hispanics represent one of fastest growing and largest minority groups in America, and as the Hispanic population and influence continue to grow, it is inextricably bound to the nation's future. America is stronger as a result of the contributions of Hispanics in business, education, government, the arts, and beyond.

"As Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off, there will be many opportunities to experience Hispanic culture through festivities focusing on art, dance, literature, history, and all the vibrant facets of Hispanic life. This month I encourage families of all backgrounds to seek out and engage with the rich cultural experience that is embodied in the Hispanic culture."
