Governor Hassan Focuses on Innovation, Efficiency in State Government at NH Lean Summit

Press Release

Location: Concord, NH

Continuing her efforts to encourage innovation and efficiency in state government, Governor Maggie Hassan addressed today state officials and business and community leaders at New Hampshire Lean Summit II: Lean Inspiring Innovation.

"We must always be focused on protecting taxpayer dollars, and using Lean tools helps ensure that we are maintaining fiscal responsibility, improving services for our citizens and providing services more efficiently," Governor Hassan said. "I commend state agencies for their ongoing work to innovate through Lean process-improvement tools, and I strongly support their continued use as we work to build a stronger, more innovative New Hampshire."

A set of tools used by the public, private and non-profit sectors, Lean improves processes by eliminating waste, increasing efficiency and elevating quality. This year's Lean summit highlighted successes from applying Lean process-improvement tools at the departments of Administrative Services, Corrections, Environmental Services, Health and Human Services, Revenue Administration, Resources and Economic Development, Safety, and Transportation, as well as the Adjutant General's Office and Gateways Community Services in Nashua.

In recognition of the successful implementation of a Lean process-improvement project within the Department of Revenue Administration's (DRA) Meals and Rental (M&R) License Renewal, the Governor presented DRA with a commendation for outstanding work in Lean process improvement.

Through the application of Lean process-improvement techniques, DRA eliminated inefficiencies and delayed application processing that sometimes caused operators to conduct business without a valid M&R License. By June 30, 2013, DRA had renewed the license for all compliant operators, reduced application reviews, shortened the application document, decreased the processing time and created a positive customer-service experience.

"In recent years, agencies and hard-working employees across the state are being asked to do more with less," DRA commissioner John Beardmore said. "As the success with M&R License Renewal proves, Lean principles help improve how state government functions, creates a better experience for our citizens and boosts the morale of state employees."

Earlier this year, Governor Hassan issued an Executive Order creating the Governor's Commission on State Government Innovation, Efficiency and Transparency to find new ways to innovate in state government in order to save taxpayer dollars and improve state services.
