"Without action, our current government operating budget is set to expire on September 30, 2013. While difficult decisions must be made regarding our nation's discretionary funding, I remain strongly opposed to a government shutdown.

"The federal government has a responsibility to seniors who depend on Social Security and Medicare. Most importantly, we must fulfill commitments to those in the military and their families.

"My constituents are tired of partisan bickering and gridlock. I believe Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate must come together to fulfill the most basic duty of Congress while preventing a government shutdown. Congress should continue to debate the problems facing this country, including ObamaCare, with the intent on finding solutions and compromise, but we should not hold the most vulnerable, our military, and our economy hostage."
