Congressman Yoder's Statement Regarding the Situation in Syria

Statement

Date: Sept. 4, 2013
Location: Overland Park, KS
Issues: Defense

Congressman Kevin Yoder made the following statement regarding the situation in Syria:

I do not support attacking Syria at this time.

While atrocities in Syria and the tremendous loss of life are unacceptable -- the purpose of any military intervention would be to stop Syria from using chemical weapons.

There is no indication that any attack on our part ensures that desired result.

This is a civil war that has been going on for some time now and there is no issue of American national security at hand. Neither the United States nor its allies have been attacked or threatened. It is certainly possible that our bombing campaign would increase the threats to the United States and its allies, rather than decrease them.

Additionally, it is not clear that the rebel forces, who we would be assisting, are our allies. In fact, it appears clear that the Syrian Opposition Forces are backed by Al-Qaida.

The situation is developing and new information is ever emerging. I appreciate hearing from so many Kansas 3rd Congressional District constituents on this issue and I will remain open to listen to all opinions as we go forward.
